Actually, I see now in the gnome-libs build log what is going on. It is actually a bug in gnome-libs that goes away if one builds gnome-libs twice.
In the bulding of libgnorba it needs libgnomesupport, which is one of the libraries it has just built itself. But instead of looking for it in the build directory, it only looks in /sw/lib where it doesn't find it unless gnome-libs was already installed before.
I have no time now to find out how to fix this in the gnome-libs info file, so if someone else wants to do it, it would be appreciated.
