So did you actually try installing gdbm3 and trying your installation again?
Yes and this time I got the error that I sent.
I also had several times an error stating that some dependencies were missing (e.g. readline). After "fink install readline" the error vanished, but another error came up (gdbm not installed).
It would have been helpful to provide an example of where these errors occurred, so that we could actually see what package in the chain needed the missing dependency.
Sadly I have no example because I installed the dependencies and every time I got a little furhter.
Is this a know issue??
Your first issue is a known one, in the sense that the Fink dependency engine doesn't automatically swap packages back and forth--this is being worked on.
The second issue (missing dependencies) is due to oversights in the description of one or more packages.
I tried it again and this time a got a different error:

I will deinstall all packages and I try again, this time I will mail the missing dependencies. That might be a little extreme.
gdbm is a common package to have to swap in, but I'm surprised about readline, since you mentioned having installed it already.
BTW, if I type "fink install svn-client-ssl" I'm promted for choosing the right dependencies. So far so good. But I get prompted to choose between python and python-nox and then I have to choose between python23 and python23-nox.That one seems strange, I'll admit The problem is that some packages depend on "python | python-nox", which could be satisfied by different python versions, while others depend on "python23 | python23-nox". Though, in this case, you can mix and match the python packages and they should still work.
Shouldn't fink handle such situations?
Greets, Jonathan
