but I cannot figure out what to do about the error, as I am a little bit new to the fink packaging and compiling process. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the libavcodec.h file being out of date, but any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Even if it is just a modification to get libquicktime0 to compile without ffmpeg support.

Run "fink remove libavcodec1-dev". Then libquicktime0 will build.

Seeing that you are on OSX 10.2 and that the libquicktime0 maintainer has gone AWOL a long time ago, you are out of luck if you want a real bug fix. The problem (incompatibility between libquicktime0 and libavcodec1-dev) has been solved for the more recent versions for OSX 10.3 and 10.4. You could try to copy the ffmpeg.info file from the 10.3 tree over to your /sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo and install the libavcodec1-dev and *-shlibs version 0.4.8-12 that it contains, but since this is an extremely heavily patched package, I wouldn't bet that it compiles on OSX 10.2.
