Any help appreciated...
On my machine with 10.4.2, xcode 2.1, fink-0.24.8-21, following several attempts, I've apparently gotten openoffice installed; fink list -i gives the following (drastically editied for space):
 i oaf-shlibs 0.6.10-26 Object Activation Framework
i openjade 1.3.2-28 Implementation of DSSSL
i openoffice.org 1.9m121-59 Integrated office productivity suite
i opensp3-shlibs 1.5-15 Shared Libraries for opensp3
i opensp4 1.5.1-2 SGML parser

Try the right command:

dpkg -S openoffice.org | grep /bin/

- -chris zubrzycki

<snip>

Ice-Wolf:/ gbp$ dpkg -s openoffice.org | grep /bin/

<snip> That's not the same command as Chris said to run

Ice-Wolf:/ gbp$ openoffice.org
-bash: openoffice.org: command not found

So, this says it's installed too...
I'm not sure what you were looking for piping the dpkg result to grep (& no, I'm not sure if I'm using the right syntax or grammar to describe what I'm trying to ask either). Here's some more info (items above & below the o's cut out to save lots o space):

It's "soffice", so you cut that out too.

Okay (d'oh),

Ice-Wolf:/sw/bin gbp$ dpkg -S openoffice.org | grep /bin/
openoffice.org: /sw/lib/openoffice.org/program/python-core-2.3.4/bin/ python
Ice-Wolf:/sw/bin gbp$

So I now understand the importance of caps on the commands...gotta say I'm still not sure what the command is supposed to be telling me. I mean, I know it grepped out any occurrence of /bin/ from the first output & then only displayed that, but what is that telling me? I gotta say, I've been using fink for several years & love it, but things like this just make me feel like such a newb that it's discouraging. Just when I think I'm picking up Unix commands & getting a little comfortable... total reversal. Ahh...

However, soffice does launch the program fine. Must admit, I don't follow the soffice abbreviation. Is there a logic to that which I'm overlooking?

Thanks for the really quick feedback, Chris & Alexander. That's one of the amazing things about the fink community.

Thanks everyone for all the hard work,
Brandon Potter
