Yes, this is the eternal problem of bad default initialisation of X11 and default xterms. There are at least 7 different ways of doing this correctly, and I think I and others wrote about this a couple of times on the lists. I suspect there is also something in the FAQ. #5.15 or so. Usually people notice that the PATH variable is not set correctly, but it is the same story as for PERL5LIB.
