Could you have a look at the file /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir and show what
it contains? It should be a small text file which in my case contains
the following:
% cat /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir

# $XFree86: xc/programs/mkfontdir/mkfontdir.cpp,v 1.1 2003/11/14
02:42:07 dawes Exp $
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontscale -b -s -l "$@"
