Joining the thread, to say I have the problem, too:
- PowerBook G4, has this (any ftp:// mirror download gets to 100% and
stays there)
- iMac G4, has this not (same wlan infrastructure) but I haven't fink
selfupdate'd that for a while..
So, trying to find the reason, and staying tuned in case someone else
finds the fix! :D

both are using Apple's curl, and just the curl command (no fink
attached) does the same:
curl -v -O ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/gnu/automake/automake-1.7.9.tar.bz2
This stucks on PowerBook, works on iMac. strange...?

I had no problem to download and build povray-3.61-2 just now. The
download command that fink used was
curl -f -L -P - -O
ftp://ftp.povray.org/pub/povray/Official/Unix/povray-3.6.1.tar.bz2
Thanks for reply, Martin - still same odd problem in my case. I did
another
fink selfupdate --> update-all (in the hope something of last
minute was
missing), then again tried, and same problems (first the previous
"incomplete" file is found, choose to delete it, restart the
download, get
the 100% within a few seconds, but curl keeps "curling" ;) to no
end (or
until CTRl-C-ing out of it)):
