I don't have any problem either, but another suggestion: check if you have a
file .octaverc in your home directory. Perhaps that is messing up your
LOADPATH, or other environment variables for octave. Then you could just move
that out of the way.

I don't have a .octaverc (this is the first time I have
tried to run it) but I do have ~/.octave-hist, which I did
not create myself, which contains:
