I think I fixed this error: somehow the ~/.octave_hist file had been created owned by root. No idea how, root is not enabled on this machine, and I didn't run octave using "sudo" according to the my shell history...but I did find from the shell history that I had to chown this file for both users on this machine -- I had forgotten the first instance. Strange. Didn't have any problems on my TiBook.
