What version of gnome-terminal are you trying (and on what OS version,
for that matter)? 2.12.0-1 works just fine for me (on Tiger). There
was a prior thread on -beginners about this:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.beginners/17514

It may be that you've got the same vte/gnome-terminal version combo as
was mentioned in the quoted text from me in that message.

This was reported a while back and has been fixed in version 0.4.2-4:

$ dpkg -c /sw/fink/debs/aterm_0.4.2-4_darwin-powerpc.deb
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2006-01-14 21:12:03 ./
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2006-01-14 21:12:03 ./sw/
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2006-01-14 21:12:06 ./sw/bin/
-rwxr-xr-x root/admin   114188 2006-01-14 21:12:06 ./sw/bin/aterm
...
(freshly built while I wrote this)

There's always konsole, but having to install kdebase3 is kind of overkill.
