The last thing I can think to try is to run "quartz-wm --only-proxy"
explcitly before you run startkde.  startkde is supposed to do that
automatically, but maybe it's confused.

Or if you _are_ doing that explicitly, try turning it off.

Therein lies the rub. I am trying to do this *without* running startkde. I just want to run an application stand-alone, displayed either locally or from a remote computer (mostly the latter).
