AFAICT, .deb files just take up space once things are installed.
Keeping them around will make subsequent installs faster, though,
because you won't have to rebuild or download them. (You may find
yourself removing and re-installing packages for various reasons.)
That said, I've been purging my system of .debs for months and not had
any ill effects (beyond having to do a lot of rebuilds of gettext!).
As root, or using sudo:
/sw/bin/find /sw/fink /sw/var -name '*.deb' | /sw/bin/xargs --verbose
--no-run-if-empty /bin/rm --
Or wrap that all up in a script somewhere and just run it every once in
a while.
Also, I'm pretty sure you can remove the *entire* /sw/fink/10.3 tree if
you're running 10.4; I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
HTH,
Dan
