Some packages are still using daemonic instead of launchd, and its operation is pretty mysterious at first. I've documnented it as best I am able after many days of experimenting with it. Includes MacOS X 10.4 troubleshooting info - many daemonic startup scripts as written by Fink packages' install scripts simply do not work without modification under 10.4 (in my experience, anyway). I hope it is helpful to someone. I have seen several requests for (or complaints about lack of) daemonic documentation on both fink lists.
