Did you mean running "fink index" (that is, indeed, much 
faster) or the "updating table data" step in fink commander? 
On my > 3 years old 876MHz TiBook that step is very slow 
too, but I don't think it changed that much when I updated 
to 0.25 just now, I think it is more a function of how many 
packages are listed in fink (over 6000 now).

Yup, same problem here :-)  And I don't fully understand 
what the --dpkg-status mode is needed for?

There seem to be some major changes in this new fink: is 
there a place to find a description of them (in not too 
techy terms)?  I like the automatic "scanpackages" updating 
after building from source, that definitely saves me time 
and error on my deb server.  But others may want to be 
warned it also needs internet access again at that point to 
finish the job...used to be you could wait until all the 
downloads were done and then it would complete everything 
off-line.
