Upgrading was hell here too. But since the upgrade:

# cat -n /sw/etc/apache2/httpd.conf
1 # This is here for backwards compatability reasons and to
support
2 # installing 3rd party modules directly via apxs2, rather than
      3 # through the /etc/apache2/mods-{available,enabled} mechanism.
      4 #
      5 #LoadModule mod_placeholder /usr/lib/apache2/modules/
mod_placeholder.so

a)
: there are far less than 233 lines ....
So, if your build seemed OK, my only suggestion would be to PURGE the
old version,
and re-try...
b) what's this ref to /usr ? _
# ls -l /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_placeholder.so
ls: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_placeholder.so: No such file or
directory

Why is mpm-prefork (still) the only recommended, while fink tries
hard to install mpm-worker instead ?
2) Can't p2 be just updated to be able to forget the virtual pkg
apache2-nothread
