Yes, it was an erase and install due to bad juju on the machine (it wouldn't get past the gray screen on start up with its old 10.3.9 system). (As an aside: does anyone know of a reliable memory tester?) However, I went and installed some binaries from the apple site (crazy things like OOo and DarwinPorts). Issuing "sudo mv /usr/local /usr/local.moved" fixed the problem and gd2 is now built and installed. Thanks!
