I installed the Xcode 2.4.1 and made sure that I included the 10.2 and 
10.3 SDKs and then tried the fink install libao2-shlibs and this time it 
worked.

I've seen this problem on many a search, so, in the spirit of saving 
somebody the grief and for posterity's sake, make sure that you have the 
following:

  - the latest CoreAudio library SDK
  - the SDKs for both 10.2 AND 10.3 installed
  - the legacy compilers
  - the latest version of the Xcode tools

My guess is that the upgrade to 2.4.1 updated the 10.3 SDK and that was 
what was needed.  I can't prove it, but I was never confident that the 
10.3 SDK was installed properly.
