I am resending this message. The actual error message was the one in config.log 
that I had included in my original message starting this thread. How would one 
test if configure is detecting /usr/lib/libreadline.dylib instead?

Yes, I did use this additional option for configure and I also tried 
"CPPFLAGS=-I/sw/include/readline" and "LDFLAGS=-L/sw/lib".
