The pangocairo update does fix it for many things anyway. With no effort on my part, gnucash, gnumeric, xchat, firefox, and several Qt programming apps show up in the Applications menu of gnome-panel. The applications even launch from the menu (as long as they'd work on their own -- terminal is busted at the moment).
