OS 10.4.11, intel iMac
Package manager version: 0.28.1
Distribution version: selfupdate-rsync [current date- update
regularly] 2008,
10.4, i386
XCode tools 2.4

I did a packet trace of the conversation with the server and found
the following:

GET /mirrors/fink/finkbindist/bindist/dists/10.4/current/crypto/
binary-darwin-i386/
Release HTTP/1.1
Host: msn.wi.us.finkmirrors.net
Connection: keep-alive
If-Modified-Since: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 00:19:38 GMT
User-Agent: Debian APT-HTTP/1.3

HTTP/1.1 500 ( Not implemented )
Via: 1.1 D300ISA2    <<====== [arrow added!]
Connection: close
Proxy-Connection: close
Pragma: no-cache
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 1960

This is followed by HTML code indicating a web page that can't load.
There is no indication in the code as to its owner.

It would appear that my network is the source of the problem. I had
not considered that since another machine (PPC, however) on the same
net has no difficulty obtaining binaries.

Thanks to those who considered the problem, especially Alexander Hansen.
