I had the same exact behavior on both by G4 and my G5 iMac, only I let it run much longer as my wife and son were both using the computer under their multiple user accounts. When I realized that the program was just looping on checking (I have never seen a program loop during checking before), I did a control C on both machines. I then selfupdated and installed the program again. The program built successfully on both machines in just a few minutes. As both Richard and I experienced the same behavior, there must be something about that program that can cause a problem or we discovered a bug in OSX. I suggest that Richard try running the program again and watch the checking. If it is going to run, the checking will finish quickly.
