I see similar problems on at least two of my systems on
which I have compiled and installed many packages
successfully...I got round it by making myself a local copy
of fontconfig2-dev-1.5.info that depends on x11, because I
thought it was only happening because I was trying to
install some 10.4 stuff (for which I was making local copies
anyway).

  i system-pkgconfig-x11 1.1.4-1 [virtual pkgconfig
package representing x11]
  p x11 [virtual package]
  p x11-dev [virtual package]
  p x11-shlibs [virtual package]

Is a vanilla 10.5 apple X11 install meant to invoke xfree86
virtual packages?

Do you mean this bit?

- checking for library libX11.6.dylib... found in
/usr/X11R6/lib
- xorg is installed
- xorg-shlibs is installed
- skipping X11 virtuals, existing X11 packages installed

I do indeed have xorg and xorg-shlibs installed via fink,
with local info/patch files. For this test though, I
removed the local trees from my fink.conf and I moved
/usr/X11R6 aside and replaced it with the link to X11 for
these tests. So the libs it is seeing are the apple ones.

If installing xorg causes these glitches, I can cope with
it, but if they are due to something else then it would be
good to sort them out. Everything I compiled on this system
was done before installing xorg, yet I still had to fix the
fontconfig2 xfree86 problem first (for firefox2 I think,
which depends on fontconfig2).
