It looks like you might be on a set of packages that haven't been supported in 
two years.  You can confirm this by checking in /sw/etc/fink.conf and seeing 
what the Distribution: line says.  If it says "10.4-transitional", then there 
haven't been any updates there since August 2006, and anything that's broken 
will remain so.
