I used to use Xnest to run a rooted X desktop as a window inside OS X. 
So inside the window, X behaved as a full-screen (ie not rootless) 
desktop, but it was still inside a window on the main OS X screen, so I 
could see both things at once.  I haven't tested it since the 10.2 days, 
so I don't know how much it will still work.  This post has suggestions 
on how to do it
