I don't think this has anything directly to do with automake1.9, so I'm
taking the maintainer off of the thread. 

It looks to me like you have a status file that got damaged.  Edit 
/sw/var/lib/dpkg/status as the superuser and look for automake1.9. 
Change its entry to read "not-installed" instead of "installed", if that
is indeed the case, and then you will be able to install automake1.9
afterward.
