I've not seen this in the context of Fink, but there are a number of
hits on Google:

There was one Fink-related reference:

but that was really for X11.

I'm assuming you're on Leopard.  Perhaps providing some context for
what's going on might shed some light.  Please post the full results of
an attempt to selfupdate, up until you get to "launch_msg(): Socket is
not connected", and then one line beyond that.
