        Thank you for your reply. It made me think. fink info plplot said  
version was 5.8.0-1015. What I did was to force the removal of octave- 
atlas and then install plplot which of course also reinstalled  
octave. Doing things this way round seems to have worked. Perhaps you  
may understand why. I have no idea. The initial part of the  
installation is given below.
