First check the libiconv library:

$ nm /sw/lib/libiconv.2.dylib | grep iconv
/sw/lib/libiconv.2.dylib(single module):
000f8020 D __libiconv_version
000169c0 t _iconv
000187c0 T _iconv_canonicalize
000169d0 t _iconv_close
000187b0 t _iconv_open
00016560 T _libiconv
000165c0 T _libiconv_close
00017f90 T _libiconv_open
00019040 t _libiconv_relocate
00018f50 T _libiconv_set_relocation_prefix
000165e0 T _libiconvctl
00016820 T _libiconvlist

If what you get looks different, e.g. missing the _iconv symbol, then
try rebuilding libiconv.

If you get output similar to the above, try running

printenv DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH

and see if that returns something. Otherwise check around on your
system for other libiconv.2.dylib instances. /usr/lib/libiconv.2.dylib
should be OK, but anything else might be suspicious.

My suspicion is that you're correct and are indeed seeing a libiconv
from somewhere else. Unfortunately, the dynamic loader blames the
library that was referenced in the file, even if it actually tried to
_use_ something else.
