From Fink's perspective:

As the compilation script for gimp2-svg has a #!/bin/sh -ev shebang
line at the beginning, the commands that are executed by the
compilation script are outputted to stderr (that's the expected
behaviour of -v).

The stdout output of the commands inside the compilation script is
outputted to stdout. In particular, those libtool command lines and
their corresponding gcc command lines are outputted to stdout.

The stderr output of the commands inside the compilation script is
outputted to stderr.

This behaviour _shouldn't_ change depending on whether fink is being
directly run by root (uid 0) or not. I've tested

fink rebuild gimp2-svg > /tmp/stdout.txt 2> /tmp/stderr.txt

using both a regular user and root, and the results were the same. I'm
on an Intel OS 10.5.8 box using Bash version 3.2.17(1)-release.

At any rate, fink --log-output (or -l) merges both stdout and stderr
output onto the log file. There's also a --logfile option.
