It works.  No errors at all.  So it is something subtle in 
the environment.  I got the error runing a fink update-all 
nohup'd.  I just remembered my original install wasn't run 
nohup.  When I just do fink install meep-mpi without any 
nohup, it works.  Hmmm.  It would be nice to fix this, 
because I usually run fink update with nohup, especially 
when logging in to servers from home.  But not urgent, 
obviously...
