I'm the sylpheed maintainer.  I hadn't tested regex's before, as I 
haven't been using them with Sylpheed.  But, now that I try them, I 
cannot get them to work either.  I don't see any recent complaints about 
regexes on the Sylpheed mailing list, so it is likely something specific 
to this package, or to the current Oniguruma package.

I'll look into it to attempt to find the cause and fix it, but it anyone 
else finds the cause first I'd be happy to have any hints.
