I did not know that fink had changed to a xinitrc.d method of handling X11.
After getting the MacBookPro with Snow Leopard, I have mostly used icewm, which
worked with the old .xinitrc file. When I tried to use gnome, I would get the
gnome-settings-daemon quits message and I had no window frames. Now, I have
done the following:
1. I removed the old .xinitrc file.
2. I reinstalled fink's xinitrc package, dbus (1.2.24-2), xfontpath in case
there had been a problem.
3. I installed a $HOME/.xinitrc.d directory as there was none after reinstall
of xinitrc package.
4. As discussed in
http://finkers.wordpress.com/2010/06/18/finks-xinitrc-gnome-and-kde/ I created
a /sw/etc/xinitrc-last-hook file with:
#!/bin/sh
. /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/98-user.sh
in it.
5. I created a $HOME/.xinitrc.d/zzz-gnome-session.sh file with the following:
#!/bin/sh
. /sw/bin/init.sh
metacity &
exec gnome-session
When I use the above file in 5. the gnome-settings-daemon still quits, and I
still have no window frames. If I comment out the metacity and exec
gnome-session lines and exec icewm-session instead, the the icewm window
manager works fine. Therefore, my xinitrc package setup must be working fine
now. After the gnome-settings-deamon quits, if I now try to access Appearances
from System in Gnome it fails to load and says that perhaps something like dbus
is not correct or a kde-settings manager is running. I reinstalled dbus, and I
presently have no kde files installed at all. I dropped kde altogether when I
got the MacBookPro, and kde would not support a 64-bit system. Of course, my
gnome setup has not worked since then either. Could my problem with gnome be
because of the 64-bit system? If not, does anyone have any other suggestions?
I could reinstall bundle-gnome. I did that when I first had problems on this
machine, but I could do it again if no one has any other suggestions. Thanks
for any help.
