Matplotlib will work okay on 64bit fink if you set it to use an X11 backend rather than the MacOSX native one. I have matplotlib set to use GTKAgg as the backend in my matplotibrc and this works fine with X11.
Maybe the global matplotlibrc (in /sw/lib/python2.X/site-packages/matplotlib/mpl-data/matplotlibrc) for 64bit fink could be patched accordingly?
