(don't use 'sudo' before 'fink'; it's unnecessary)

Neither texlive-base nor fink are _my_ packages, so I'm sending this
over to the users list.

The "fink list" issue and the failure to install are at all related.
There's no connection between the "list" function and the contents of a
.deb file.

I've no clue what the issue is with "fink list texlive*". It works for
me. Maybe someone on the list has experienced a similar issue.

Your texlive-base install failure looks like it could be due to a bad
TeX path. I have the following:

$ dlocate updmap.cfg
texlive-base: /sw32/share/man/man5/updmap.cfg.5
texlive-base: /sw32/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
texlive-texmf: /sw32/share/texmf-dist/doc/man/man5/updmap.cfg.5
texlive-texmf: /sw32/share/texmf-dist/web2c/updmap.cfg

It looks like your TeX path has a bunch of extra directories.

Try running "sudo mktexlsr" and see if texlive-base will install properly.
