Hi, Thank you, Alexander, for your detailed answers.

Oops. I didn't keep the messages. After I posted that, it occurred to me "What about just deleting coreutils-default?" My main machine is a Debian GNU/Linux box (That's why I like to use fink on Macs) and deleting the coreutils package seemed scary at first. Anyway, I just deleted coreutils-default and textutils, because the latter depends on the former; installed gimp2; and then installed textutils (which pulled coreutils-default in). All went smoothly. So, I lost the means of finding the source of the original problem. | Is there any information that occurs just above the Failed: message, | such as the name of the package that wants coreutils-default removed, | and / or the one which won't let that happen? No, I don't think so. (That's why I elided the other lines.) So, the error must have been farther up off the screen. Now, I'm wondering if it's possible to detect this kind of dependency problems before actually installing the packages? Is there any "dry run" option for fink to do this? (The actual "--dry-run" option doesn't seem to.) It typically takes tens of minutes or even hours to install a largish package such as gimp and thousands or tens of thousands of lines of messages are emitted on the screen, which is the reason why I hesitate to capture and store those messages.
