I could build the package on my old PowerBook G4 with Mac OS X 10.5.8 and
PowerPC 7447A hardware. From its past it has gcj (GCC) 4.6.2, gcj (GCC) 4.5.3,
and gcj (GCC) 4.4.6. The first two versions of gcj are faulty and fall into
some infinite loop trying to allocate vast quantities of virtual memory – a
well known and years old bug. The old 4.4.6 version works:
checking for gccgo... no
checking for gcj... gcj
checking if gcj supports -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions... (cached) no
checking for gcj option to produce PIC... -fno-common
checking if gcj PIC flag -fno-common works... yes
checking if gcj static flag -static works... no
checking if gcj supports -c -o file.o... yes
checking if gcj supports -c -o file.o... (cached) yes
checking whether the gcj linker
(/usr/libexec/gcc/powerpc-apple-darwin9/4.2.1/ld) supports shared libraries...
yes
checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate
checking for windres... no
checking whether make supports order-only prerequisites... yes
configure: creating ./config.status
Installed are right now:
i libtool14-shlibs 1.5.26-4 Shared libraries for libtool,
v1.5
i libtool2 2.4.2-1 Shared library build helper, v2.x
i libtool2-shlibs 2.4.2-1 Shared libraries for libtool, v2.x
i gcc4.0 4.0.1-5493 [virtual package representing the gcc 4.0.1
compiler]
i gcc4.2 4.2.1-5577 [virtual package representing the gcc 4.2.1
compiler]
i gcc44 4.4.6-1001 GNU Compiler Collection Version 4.4
i gcc44-compiler 4.4.6-1001 Compiler Binaries for gcc44.
i gcc44-shlibs 4.4.6-1001 Shared libraries for gcc4
i gcc45-compiler 4.5.3-1001 Compiler Binaries for gcc45.
i gcc45-shlibs 4.5.3-1001 Shared libraries for gcc4
i gcc46-compiler 4.6.2-1000 Compiler Binaries for gcc46.
i gcc46-shlibs 4.6.2-1000 Shared libraries for gcc4
(It's nice that I can simply 'fink install gcc4x'!)
