That hasn't been needed in several years. .la files are now
automatically postprocessed to get rid of what was problematic (and
that was for _any_ Xcode).
also removed all packages that could interfere from Macports, including
the *.la
same also
find /lib -name *.la | xargs rm
in opt and usr and usr/local
and selfupdate, update-all for fink, etc
however still no go...
anything else you can advise
much appreciated

That looks like it's from a Macports X11, which we don't support, or
Xquartz on 10.6, which we also don't support. We _only_ support
Apple's standard X11 on 10.6+ .
It's not yet obvious from your post why this is getting linked in,
however. It _may_ be possible to work around this by temporarily
renaming /opt/local while you build librsvg2.
