Thanks a lot for this hint.

I checked with "which g++-4.2" and found "/usr/bin/g++-4.2". By a closer look 
at "/usr/bin" I dug out a lot(!) of other old stuff which was installed by 
macports and others (but not apple). So I just removed everything that had 
"date of change" prior to time of Mountain Lion upgrade. Now, fink seems to 
call "the right" compiler binary and qt3 as well as octave are built 
successfully.
