You've got a 32-bit kernel, presumably. Some machines are perfectly capable of using 64-bit libraries and executables but aren't allowed to use a 64-bit kernel (I'm guessing that's to ensure future sales). I've got a Macbook in that category. That wasn't the 'i386' that we don't support, though. I meant the i386 Fink distribution, because our builds on 10.7 are 64-bit.
