The change I checked in will be used for both G4 and G5 (ala MacPorts). If 
there is enough demand,
I would change that to use sysctl to only add '-mtune=7400 -mcpu=7400' on build 
machines with G4's.
The fact that the failure is a a tune related log suggests that this may well 
fix the issue on G4's.

ps Note that upstream apparently hasn't tested on PowerPC Macs for awhile as 
they don't have the
expected arch tgz available and the misnamed legacy ones aren't properly 
configured for the newer
atlas releases to build. The current build on PowerPC Macs relies on a full 
manual determination of
the proper configuration settings for the build (with the guidance of passing 
-A4).
