It should work with imagemagick5-dev on newer Mac OS X versions. And I also
assume that imagemagick7-dev is fine.
If you don't have X11 installed you can remove the x11-dev dependency and also
this test case:
pushd contrib/cairo
make -f cairo-example.mk
./cairo-example &
./cairo-example-pango &
popd
