I've been trying to get gcc48 built on my newly-upgraded-to-Mavericks Mac Mini.
 After a few failures I looked up some of the error messages I was seeing, and
tried a few of the suggested fixes. I ran fink selfupdate manually, no
problem. I removed lock files from (IIRC) /sw/var/lib/lock/. I built a bunch
of other packages, some successfully, others got me back to the gcc48
bottleneck. I went to /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status and edited out the paragraph
referring to fink-buildlock-gcc48-4.8.2-1001 and tried again. That gave me the
same errors I've gotten the last dozen or so times I've tried. So it's time to
throw myself at your mercy again. Sorry.

To keep it cleaner, I used

# fink build gcc48

and after an hour or two of productive-looking progress (many, many pages of
output) it stopped with this:
.
.
.

Before reporting any errors, please run "fink selfupdate" and try again.

If you continue to have issues, please check to see if the FAQ on Fink's
website solves the problem. If not, ask on one (not both, please) of
these mailing lists:

        The Fink Users List <fink-users@lists.sourceforge.net>
        The Fink Beginners List <fink-beginn...@lists.sourceforge.net>,

with a carbon copy to the maintainer:

        Jack Howarth <howa...@bromo.med.uc.edu>

Note that this is preferable to emailing just the maintainer directly,
since most fink package maintainers do not have access to all possible
hardware and software configurations.

Please try to include the complete error message in your report. This
generally consists of a compiler line starting with e.g. "gcc" or "g++"
followed by the actual error output from the compiler.

Also include the following system information:
Package manager version: 0.36.3.1
Distribution version: selfupdate-, 10.9, x86_64
Trees: local/main stable/main
Xcode.app: 5.0.2
Xcode command-line tools: 5.0.1.0.1.1382131676
Max. Fink build jobs:  1

NOTE: When I had v 10.8, I got away with just symlinking /sw/fink/10.8 to
/sw/fink/10.7, so (IIRC) when 10.9 complained about missing /sw/fink/10.9 I
just symlinked that to /sw/fink/10.7 the same way. This seems to satisfy most
needs, but the above claims /sw/fink/10.9/VERSION is not readable. ?? Looks
fine to me!

ALSO NOTE: I am also getting constant messages from perl about locale settings:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
    LC_ALL = (unset),
    LANG = "en_US.utf8"
    are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
    LC_ALL = (unset),
    LANG = "en_US.utf8"
    are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

I found advice (from Debian) to fix this using
# locale-gen en_US en_US.UTF-8 hu_HU hu_HU.UTF-8
but there is no such package on my system (or in fink, apparently).
Is this serious? I don't mess with locales if I can avoid it.
