Sure, give that a try.  I’ve had to do things like that in the past, 
occasionally, to deal with issues of case sensitivity and the like.

I did a rebuild of texlive-texmf here, and I’ve got 
/sw/share/texmf-dist/doc/latex/akktex/README.TEXLIVE now, and I didn’t have the 
same problem you did.  

(actually I think i just missed seeing it before because I was in the middle of 
work. :-) )
