It's not a CD-ROM cursor. It's just a wait cursor.
I'm guessing you have auto-login enabled. What's probably happening is
that the "about 3 minutes" you're seeing is how long it's taking the
service(s) you use to login or fail trying. It's only normal to take
that long if there's an error. Although irc seems to take forever to
login.
