Something you could do, were you adventurous enough (ie. masochistic 
enough) to play with it, you could build something around, say, 
BerkeleyDB and make a sort of mini-database for all conversations.  
Eventually this would allow for fairly easy searching on various fields, 
message text, etc.  Just managed to get BDB 3.x or so to compile and was 
toying with making an ObjC wrapper around it.

But it doesn't sound as big a problem as the original poster thought.
