There sure is.  Hire a bunch of people who can sit around and make sure 
that every bit of code is the same.

You can either reverse engineer the code or the protocol.

This is the aim of the libfaim project (which Fire used to use) however 
until you get it absolutely correct (which you most likely never will) 
AOL can still find ways to screw you.
