I am afraid I don't understand the question.  Old passpharase? New 
passphrase.  You should only have one passphrase on your key... Unless 
you have multiple keys or multiple computers.  You choose the key in the 
Profile Preferences Pane.  Perhaps you have the wrong key chosen in the 
preferences or you changed your passphrase on another machine?

Fire uses libgpgme.. which just calls gpg, so there is not "trickiness" 
going on.
