Yeah, well, since Fire doesn't support HTTP proxy I can't try this out 
now, but I did talk to an Icelander yesterday over MSN (he was using the 
official MSN client) and Proteus displayed all the characters correctly 
(including Þ and Ð). I'll give Fire another go tonight.
