Yep, if both of you have Fire, it's pretty easy. Currently, Fire is the
only IM app on any platform that supports GPG-/PGP-encrypted communications.
(Another Mac-first.)
If you want to see other apps support GPG-/PGP-encrypted communications, bug
their developers.
