Every once in a while Fire does that to me, but when I quit and restart
it, it goes back down to normal. This doesn't seem to be unique to Fire,
many different apps do this for me.

I always keep CPU Monitor on, partly because I have a laptop and any
extra CPU usage will cost me battery time and might turn on that darn
loud fan.
